Following an invitation from the management team of the RCCG Department of Public Health (Centre for Disease Control and Prevention), our team was on ground to deliver a hands-on training on the practical use of cryotherapy for cervical pre-cancer lesions. The session, which was spearheaded by our CEO, Dr. Idris Ola, and supported by our nurses and volunteers, was engaging and interactive.

The director of RCCG Department of Public Health, Dr. Joshua Abayomi Kayode (MB; BS; FMCPH; FCICN), the matron, the Head of Department (HOD), along with other staffs were in attendance. The training session covered key aspects, such as the principles of cryotherapy and its role in the prevention of cervical cancer, best practices for cryotherapy, including patient selection and infection prevention measures. Special attention was given to identifying the stages of cervical pre-cancer lesions that are suitable for cryotherapy, to help staffs make better decisions before starting the process.
Dr. Ola also provided detailed insights into the different types of cryoprobes, their appropriate use, and how to select the most suitable probe for different patient types. Possible side effects were discussed, along with guidance on patient counseling and reassurance. The importance of patients’ consent, documentation, and clear communication was also emphasized.

The session was immediately followed by a question-and-answer segment and a practical demonstration by Dr. Ola, allowing staff to observe the technique and working principles of the cryotherapy machine properly. Several questions were asked, and mini quizzes were done to assess understanding and reinforce key concepts. Our team was well-received and appreciated after the session.

We remain committed to supporting institutions and healthcare workers through training and community-focused interventions, as we collectively work toward reducing preventable deaths from cervical cancer and improving women’s health outcomes.
Many thanks to our esteemed staff and volunteers who contributed immensely to making the training a huge success story.
Watch out for the continuation of our training series soon.
